- Apostille only works for Hague Convention countries
An apostille is valid solely between members of the Hague Apostille Convention. For non-members — including the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait — an apostille is not accepted, and you must use embassy attestation instead. Confirm your destination’s status before anything else.
- The Chamber of Commerce comes first
Commercial documents cannot go straight to apostille. They are verified first by the Chamber of Commerce, which authenticates them before the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) applies the apostille. Skipping this step means rejection.
- The MEA is the only authority that apostilles
In India, only the MEA issues apostilles — typically through authorized outsourced agencies or the online system rather than a public counter. The apostille is a numbered sticker that can be verified online.
- Originals and accuracy matter
You cannot apostille a plain photocopy — use originals or properly certified copies. And ensure company names, addresses and signatory details are consistent across every document; mismatches are the most common cause of rejection.
- Several Gulf markets now take apostille
A useful recent development: Saudi Arabia (a Hague member since December 2022), along with longstanding members Oman and Bahrain, now accept apostilled documents — a simpler route than the old embassy process. The UAE, Qatar and Kuwait still require embassy attestation.
