Step 1 — Identify the type of error
- A genuine mistake made by the issuing authority (wrong spelling, date or detail).
- A mismatch between two legitimately different records (e.g., maiden vs married name).

Step 2 — Correct genuine errors at the source

Step 3 — Bridge legitimate differences
Where the “error” is really two valid versions of a name (marriage, formal name change), you bridge them with an attested affidavit, marriage certificate or gazette notification, rather than changing the certificate.
Step 4 — Then apostille
Once corrected or bridged, take the document through the normal chain — state verification, then MEA apostille (or embassy attestation for non-Hague destinations). It will now pass the checks it would have failed.
